‘Kontinental ’25’ Review: Radu Jude’s Assault On Gentrification In Romania Finds Him In Surprisingly Contemplative Mood – Berlin Film Festival

February 20, 2025 Arthur Reynolds

Romanian hell-raiser Radu Jude won the 2021 Golden Bear in Berlin with the anarchic Covid-era call to arms Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn, in which a teacher is persecuted by her school’s community when a sex video her husband made somehow leaks on the internet. Now, after his even more explosive Do Not Expect Too Much of the End of the World and a brace of more experimental documentaries screened in the Locarno Film Festival — he is nothing if not prolific — he returns in what counts for him as a contemplative mood.

Kontinental ’25 bundles up his usual firecracker concerns: the rise of cowboy capitalism in Romania, the enduring racism in Eastern Europe, the dissolution of social bonds and what that means for the poor. It also has the highest count of mechanical models in any film since Toy Story, popping up at apparent random, and some rampantly inappropriate inter-generational sex in a park. It is, in other words, very much a Radu Jude film.

But it is a Radu Jude film with a narrative throughline that never diverges into some other time zone, bizarre comedy routines or a dissertation on history to break things up and put us through the tumble-dryer of Jude’s restless imagination. It is Jude on, if not his best behavior, at least the kind of behavior that won’t get him thrown out of a diplomatic reception, in the unlikely event that he wanted to go to one.

At its center is the essential question of what responsibility we owe each other as human beings — or, to put it in a more traditional way, how we deal with sin and guilt. Ortolya (Eszter Tompa) is a municipal bailiff in picturesque Cluj, Transylvania, whose job requires her to work in an uneasy alliance with developers keen to throw up luxury hotels on every corner. They just want to clear the human detritus standing the way of their bulldozers.

Their target is a derelict man who lives off begging, occasional odd jobs and whatever rubbish he can find in the local forest, which the city’s entrepreneurs have filled with working life-size models of dinosaurs. In the opening scene, the old man lurches and curses his way through this Arcadia, the various models roaring and twiddling their claws as he catches their electronic eyes.

This man was once a provincial marathon champion before turning to drink. Now he lives in a decrepit basement; Ortolya has argued for one extension after another, organized a bed in a shelter and has a moving van at the ready to shift his accumulation of rubbish. Of course, he has ignored the eviction notice. She and the hotel company’s goons give him 20 minutes to pack. When they go back, he is dead, having hanged himself from the radiator with a piece of wire.

Ortolya knows she isn’t legally culpable, but isn’t this her doing? Over the next hours, we watch her tell people what happened and how she feels, sometimes dissolving into tears: her male boss, her husband, her best friend, her mother, a former student from her days as a teacher and, finally, her priest hear the story. They react in different ways, but all want to paper over whatever cracks the incident has exposed, thus exposing something of themselves.

Her friend tries to establish some fellow feeling by relating how she had a homeless man removed from their building because he was smelly.  Her Hungarian-speaking mother slips almost instantly into a well-worn tirade against lazy Romanians. Those Romanians are by no slouches when it comes to online abuse, however. “Hungarian-ethnic bailiff pushes Romanian athlete to his death,” says one newspaper headline. Her husband pursues her around the house, gleefully reading the below-the-line comments. “We should kill all the Hungarians, with her shit skank face!” She shrinks away. “We used to laugh at this stuff,” he says resentfully.

Like all Radu Jude’s films, this is both angry and ironic; nobody here, including the people sitting in the street cafes, averting their eyes from the beggars, is innocent. That includes us: As Ortolya tells her story over and over, we want her to somehow get over it, move on with her life, whatever other cliché one might muster from a self-help book. The repetitions of the events, which get shorter but are always couched in the same words, raise all kinds of questions about storytelling: how the story reshapes events, how responses to that story smooth it down, how the story itself is diluted as she keeps retelling it and her listeners seem unable to grasp what it means to her. Her guilt effectively is canceled, restoring the momentary rupture represented by her disturbing feelings that nothing here is as it should be.

Approved or denied’: Health care providers say insurers too often deny care for profit

February 20, 2025 Arthur Reynolds

Insurers say they help lower patient costs by helping people avoid unnecessary or inappropriate health services.

Amanda Watson was diagnosed with breast cancer three weeks after having an emergency cesarean section to deliver her second son. Her test results showed she had one of the most aggressive forms of breast cancer, with a high recurrence rate and low survival rate.

The following six months of chemotherapy treatments included five hospitalizations, the loss of her hair, and the inability to care for herself or her children.

To make a gut-wrenching situation worse, her insurance company denied coverage for treatment multiple times, leading to delays in her care.

Her denials included one for a certain chemotherapy and another for a medical device to remove excess fluid retained after her mastectomy.

“It’s hard not to waver in your convictions and not to lose hope during this type of battle,” she said. “When an insurance company can so blindly look at you, not as a person, not as a wife, not as a daughter, not as a mother of two babies … just as a simple word, ‘approved or denied.’”

Watson recounted her story during a news conference Jan. 28 held by the North Carolina Medical Society, which represents physicians and physician assistants. Medical Society leaders called for reform to a process known as prior authorization, in which insurance companies require patients and doctors to jump through hoops before they’ll approve some treatments, tests or doctor visits.

The goal for insurers is to avoid unnecessary or inappropriate utilization of health services. Advocates say, for their part, that prior authorization is a way to deny care and boost insurers’ bottom lines.

Overtreatment is a problem in the U.S. health care system, but John Thompson, vice president of advocacy at the NC Medical Society, said that’s become “another excuse” used by insurers.

Watson’s one of many North Carolinians who have experienced a tug-of-war between their insurance company and doctor over treatment. Some lawmakers from the North Carolina House of Representatives want to change that by passing legislation to, as they put it, lessen the administrative burden on physicians and rein in the use of prior authorization for those in state-regulated health plans.

There’s precedent for this. During President Joe Biden’s final year in office, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services made rule changes to the prior authorization process in federally regulated plans like Medicare to improve the electronic flow of information between providers and insurers, and set time limits for how long it can take for an insurer to respond to a physician’s request for treatment.

This idea is to save providers time and money.

‘The time is now’

Rep. Timothy Reeder (R-Ayden), an emergency room physician from Pitt County, said that reforming the prior authorization process in the state will be at the top of his legislative agenda. Reeder co-sponsored a bill to improve prior authorization during the 2023-24 legislative session.

That bill, House Bill 649, unanimously passed the House but came to a screeching halt in the North Carolina Senate. This time around, Reeder hopes things will be different; he said there’s more interest in the topic now at state and national levels.

“The time is really now,” he said. “For the Senate to not take up this bill, not hear it, not to work on this bill, is something that we’re going to push hard on, both personally and as a chamber.”

Only one senator attended the event — freshman Sen. Mark Hollo (R-Conover), a retired physician’s assistant, who also served in the House of Representatives. He said he’s “anxious to get started” on this issue with his House colleagues.

The reforms could take place in multiple bills throughout the session, according to Emma Kate Burns, health policy manager at the N.C. Medical Society. Last session’s bill applied to a small number of plans, but this time, the plan is to have the reforms apply to as many plans subject to state regulation as they can.

The 2023 bill would’ve required insurers to update their review criteria each year and similar to the new federal rules, would have provided time frames in which insurers must make decisions based on how urgently a treatment is needed, as well as set limits on when retrospective denials can occur.

Randy Aldridge, vice president of communications and marketing at the medical society, said the upcoming legislation will likely have similarities to HB 649.

Some of the society’s suggested reforms include the standardization of timelines for approval/denial and exemptions for clinicians with high approval ratings, as well as standardized lists of which treatments and medications require prior authorization.

Delaying care

Rep. Grant Campbell (R-Concord), an obstetrician-gynecologist, spoke about his experiences with prior authorization at the news conference. He used the example of one of his patients who was in their late 20s and had an ovarian mass “slightly smaller than a football.”

He suspected the mass was malignant cancer and scheduled the patient for surgery to evaluate. A few days before the surgery, the insurance company denied coverage for the procedure. Campbell had to explain why it was necessary in a peer-to-peer review with a health care provider working for the insurance company.

The provider was a psychiatrist who told Campbell he couldn’t do the surgery until he tried birth control pills as a treatment first. Campbell said it was upsetting to be told how to treat a patient by someone who was not an OB-GYN.

“This is about delaying care,” he said. “This is about forcing patients and physicians to settle for cheaper, less effective care, or ultimately hoping the patient gives up and pays out of pocket.”

Internist and pediatrician John Meier, president of the medical society’s board of directors, said insurance companies look at costs year to year and may base prior authorization decisions on those numbers. In contrast, he said, providers are thinking about the health of the patient years down the line.

He also argued the administrative burden on providers and staff takes away from time caring for patients.

Campbell said he had to hire staff solely dedicated to handling prior authorization requests with insurance companies.

The medical society cited numbers from the Council for Affordable Quality Healthcare, a nonprofit alliance of health plans and related associations working to streamline the health care system, that providers spent an average of $11 for each manual prior authorization transaction in 2019, while plans spent $3.

‘Gaming the system’

Insurers argue that prior authorization reduces costs for patients by preventing unnecessary treatments, which helps to contain costs. In a statement from Peter Daniel, executive director of the NC Association of Health Plans, an industry group, he claimed that North Carolina has the highest health care costs of any state and insurers also want to bring those costs down while improving patient care.

“Health plans have taken several steps to work toward those goals by reducing administrative burdens on providers,” he said. “We remain willing to work with other stakeholders and the General Assembly on comprehensive and meaningful regulatory reforms to our health care system that will lead to more affordable care and better health outcomes for North Carolinians.”

Campbell said at the conference he doesn’t want this to have to be a legislative solution — but if insurance companies don’t come forward with a fix, legislation may be necessary.

Daniel told NC Health News that the association has tried to work on these issues with the medical society without success. He said he would prefer finding a solution in conjunction with providers and taking that to the legislature, rather than having lawmakers enact a government mandate.

“Where the private sector can’t fix it and the government comes in, there are all sorts of unintended consequences,” he said.

Companies also hear complaints from their customers about this bureaucratic process, Daniel said and he argued that some major plans have been working for over a year to take “hundreds of procedures” off the list of those that require prior authorization.

“We just ask that the rhetoric be turned down,” he said. “Let us sit at the table. Let’s work towards consensus.”

Gina Upchurch, executive director of Durham-based Senior PharmAssist, said she sees both sides of the conflict. While it is true that insurance companies can make a lot of money denying care, providers in the U.S. are also paid more than those in Europe even as overtreatment remains a problem, she said.

“Everybody loves a scapegoat. Hospitals will say it’s insurance companies. Providers say the hospital and insurance company are bullies,” she said. “Everybody’s pointing a finger, but everybody’s, in many ways, just gaming in the system.”

Still, the administrative burden on providers is a problem, she said. And as providers have to deal with different companies and different processes for each patient, streamlining the prior authorization process would help lessen that burden.

Changes at the federal level

The federal government has already taken steps to make changes to the prior authorization process to “reduce administrative burden.” Any changes enacted by the N.C. General Assembly wouldn’t affect the federal Medicare program, but for the more than 2.2 million North Carolinians who are eligible for Medicare, the 2024 reforms from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services could impact them.

Insurance companies Aetna, Centene and Kaiser Permanente denied at least one in 10 Medicare Advantage prior authorization requests in 2023, according to an analysis by policy and research organization KFF.

The federal regulators scheduled the changes to prior authorization to roll out in 2026. The changes also compel insurers to provide a specific reason for denial. Insurers will also have to start publicly reporting certain prior authorization metrics each year.

If the new federal rules continue their rollout, payers in 2027 will have to create a prior authorization platform for providers and to regularly update patient portals to include prior authorization request and decision information so that patients can stay informed.

The agency estimated these changes should save about $15 billion over 10 years.

Power Query Functions: Building Flexible and Reusable Data Cleaning Routines

February 20, 2025 Arthur Reynolds

Enhancing Consistency and Efficiency with Customizable Power Query Workflows

When extracting and transforming data in Power BI, we often repeat the same steps across different projects. This repetition raises the question: can these steps be generalized and reusable in future projects?

This post will explore a solution that breaks down these steps into flexible and reusable parameters and functions, eliminating the need to recreate these common steps across our projects. The solution leverages parameters, functions, and queries to standardize various parts of our data preparation process when CSV files in a SharePoint document library are the data source.

Don’t just read; get hands-on and view all the details in the template report available here:

Power Query Parameters

Parameters help keep our data preparation process as dynamic as possible. They provide a level of flexibility to our Power Query functions and allow us to modify their behavior without altering the underlying function definition. This flexibility enables this solution to adapt to different requirements and increases the reusability of our work.

In our solution, 7 parameters manage how data is loaded, cleaned, and transformed.

SharePoint Site Url (Text): specifies the SharePoint site URL where the CSV files are stored.

https://yourcompany.sharepoint.com/sites/yoursite

SharePoint Folder Path (Text): defines the folder path within the SharePoint site where the CSV files are located.

https://yourcompany.sharepoint.com/sites/yoursite/yourfolder/

textColumns (Text): a comma-separated list of column names that require text transformations.

Column Name 1, Column Name 2, Column Name 3

textFormatCase (Text): a text value that specifies how text columns should be formatted. Options include Proper, Lower, and Upper case.

columnDataTypes (Text): a semicolon-separated list of column names paired with their corresponding data type description, used to dynamically set the data types of each column.

Column Name 1,date;
Column Name 2,whole number;
Column Name 3,text;
Column Name 4,text;
Column Name 5,text;
Column Name 6,whole number;
Column Name 7,decimal number

errorHandlingOption (Text): sets how errors are handled within the dataset and provides the options of RemoveErrors, ReplaceErrors, or None.

viewErrorSummary (TRUE/FALSE): toggles between displaying a summary of rows that contain errors and returning the cleaned dataset.

Once we create our parameters and set their values, we can reference them throughout our functions and queries. This enables us to adjust the entire data transformation process by updating the parameter values.

Supporting Utility Functions

To enhance the reusability of our Power Query solution, we first break down complex data transformations into smaller, modular functions. Each utility function handles a specific task, improving its maintainability and allowing us to apply them individually or collectively across different datasets.

fxParameterToList

(parameterName as text) as list =>
   List.Transform(Text.Split(parameterName, ","), each Text.Trim(_))

Many of our parameters in this solution are comma-separated strings that we must convert to list objects before using them in a list-based transformation within Power Query. Since many of our parameters and functions require this, creating a function allows us to repeat this operation easily.

The function has a single input parameter (parameterName), a comma-separated string of values. It then splits this input by commas, trims surrounding spaces, and converts the result into a list. This is used when calling and passing parameter values to other utility functions such as fxTransformTextFormat and fxTransformTextTrim.

fxTransformTextTrim

The fxTransformTextTrim function trims any leading and trailing spaces from text values in the specified columns. Trimming can be essential when cleaning user-entered data or other text extracted from external sources.

(inputTable as table, columnsToTrim as list) as table =>
    Table.TransformColumns(inputTable, List.Transform(columnsToTrim, each {_, Text.Trim, type text}))

This function has two input parameters:

  • inputTable: a table containing the data to be trimmed
  • columnsToTrim: a list of text columns that require trimming

The fxTransformTextTrim function applies Text.Trim to each column specified in columnsToTrim, ensuring our text data is clean and consistent.

fxTransformTextFormat

The fxTransformTextFormat function standardizes the case formatting of our text data depending on the caseType input parameter. Depending on our requirements, the function can convert text data to Proper Case, Lower Case, or Upper Case.

(inputTable as table, columnsToTransform as list, caseType as text) as table =>
    let
        // Determine the transformation function based on caseType input
        CaseFunction = if caseType = "Proper" then Text.Proper
                       else if caseType = "Lower" then Text.Lower
                       else if caseType = "Upper" then Text.Upper
                       else error "Unsupported case type: Use 'Proper', 'Lower', or 'Upper'",

        // Apply the selected case transformation to each column in the list
        TransformTextCase = Table.TransformColumns(inputTable, List.Transform(columnsToTransform, each {_, CaseFunction, type text}))
    in
        TransformTextCase

This function has three input parameters:

  • inputTable: a table containing the data to be transformed
  • columnsToTransform: a list of columns that require text formatting
  • caseType: a text value specifying the desired text format (Proper, Lower, or Upper)

Using the caseType parameter, the function identifies the transformation type and then applies the transformation to the specified columns.

fxTransformRemoveDuplicates

The fxTransformRemoveDuplicates is a straightforward function that removes duplicated rows within our dataset.

(inputTable as table) as table =>
Table.Distinct(inputTable)

This function has a single parameter:

  • inputTable: a data table to remove duplicate rows from

The function uses Table.Distinct to identify and remove duplicated rows and returns a table with each row being unique.

fxTransformSetDataTypes

The fxTransformSetDataTypes function maps a textual description of the data type to the Power Query data type. The function allows dynamically setting column data types based on our columnDataTypes Power Query parameter.

(columnType as text) as type =>
    let
        lowerColumnType = Text.Lower(columnType),
        columnTypeResult =
            if lowerColumnType = "decimal number" then type number
            else if lowerColumnType = "fixed decimal number" then type number
            else if lowerColumnType = "whole number" then Int64.Type
            else if lowerColumnType = "percentage" then type number
            else if lowerColumnType = "date/time" then type datetime
            else if lowerColumnType = "date" then type date
            else if lowerColumnType = "time" then type time
            else if lowerColumnType = "date/time/timezone" then type datetimezone
            else if lowerColumnType = "duration" then type duration
            else if lowerColumnType = "text" then type text
            else if lowerColumnType = "true/false" then type logical
            else if lowerColumnType = "binary" then type binary
            else type text // Default to text if the type is unrecognized
    in
        columnTypeResult

The function has a single input parameter:

  • columnType: a text value of the data type to set for a column

This function helps us leverage common textual descriptions to set Power Query data types across our dataset columns.

fxErrorHandling

The fxErrorHandling function allows us to manage how our dataset handles errors based on our requirements. We can use the function’s input parameter to remove rows containing errors, replace error values with null, or retain the errors within the dataset.

(inputTable as table, errorHandlingOption as text) as table =>
let
    ErrorRows = Table.SelectRowsWithErrors(inputTable),

    // Determine the action based on the error handling option provided
    ErrorHandlingResult =
    if errorHandlingOption = "RemoveErrors" then
        // Remove rows with any errors
        Table.RemoveRowsWithErrors(inputTable)
    else if errorHandlingOption = "ReplaceErrors" then
        // Replace errors with a specified value (default is "Error" if replaceValue is not provided)
        let
            ReplaceErrorsStep =
                let
                    // Get a list of column names
                    columnNames = Table.ColumnNames(inputTable),
                    // Create a list of replacement rules where each column is mapped to null in case of error
                    errorReplacementList = List.Transform(columnNames, each {_, null})
                in
                    Table.ReplaceErrorValues(inputTable, errorReplacementList)
        in
            ReplaceErrorsStep
    else
        // If the parameter is not set correctly, return the data as is
        inputTable,

    Output = if viewErrorSummary then ErrorRows else ErrorHandlingResult
in
    Output

The function has two input parameters:

  • inputTable: a data table to be evaluated for errors
  • errorHandlingOption: specifies how the errors within inputTable should be handled (RemoveErrors, ReplaceErrors, None)

The function also utilizes the viewErrorSummary Power Query parameter. This parameter can be set to TRUE/FALSE and determines whether to return an error summary or the cleaned dataset.

This function identifies rows with errors. Depending on the errorHandlingOption, it will remove the rows containing errors, replace the error values with null, or return inputTable without handling the errors.

If viewErrorSummary is set to TRUE, the function returns only the rows that contain errors, allowing us to inspect the errors further within our dataset.

Core Function – TranformCSV

The fxTransformCSV function is the start of our standardized data processing solution, designed to handle our CSV files in a modular and reusable way.

It takes the raw contents of our CSV files, applies a defined set of transformations, and then outputs a clean data table ready for our analysis. This function leverages the utility functions discussed in the previous section.

(FileContent as binary) =>
let
    //STEP 01: Importing CSV files
    ImportCSV = Csv.Document(FileContent,[Delimiter=",", Encoding=1252, QuoteStyle=QuoteStyle.None]),
    PromoteHeaders = Table.PromoteHeaders(ImportCSV, [PromoteAllScalars=true]),

    //STEP 02: Cleaning blank rows/columns
    //Clean blank rows
    RemoveBlankRows = Table.SelectRows(PromoteHeaders, each not List.IsEmpty(List.RemoveMatchingItems(Record.FieldValues(_), {"", null}))),
    //Clean blank columns
    RemoveBlankColumns = Table.SelectColumns(RemoveBlankRows, List.Select(Table.ColumnNames(RemoveBlankRows), each not List.IsEmpty(List.RemoveMatchingItems(Table.Column(RemoveBlankRows, _), {""," ", null})))),

    //STEP 03: Replace empty strings with null
    ReplaceValue = Table.ReplaceValue(RemoveBlankColumns,"",null,Replacer.ReplaceValue,Table.ColumnNames(RemoveBlankColumns)),

    //STEP 04: Remove duplicates
    RemoveDuplicates = fxTransformRemoveDuplicates(ReplaceValue),

    //STEP 05: Text transformations
    // Convert the textColumns parameter into a list
    TextColumnsToTransform = fxParameterToList(textColumns),
    // Apply the TrimTextColumns function
    TrimTextColumns = fxTransfromTextTrim(RemoveDuplicates, TextColumnsToTransform),
    // Apply the TransformTextCase function for Proper Case (can also be "Lower" or "Upper")
    FormatTextColumns = fxTransformTextFormat(TrimTextColumns, TextColumnsToTransform, textFormatCase)

in
    FormatTextColumns

Breaking Down fxTransformCSV

STEP 01: Importing the CSV files

The function begins by reading the contents of the CSV files and then promotes the first row to headers.

//STEP 01: Importing CSV files
    ImportCSV = Csv.Document(FileContent,[Delimiter=",", Encoding=1252, QuoteStyle=QuoteStyle.None]),
    PromoteHeaders = Table.PromoteHeaders(ImportCSV, [PromoteAllScalars=true]),

STEP 02: Cleaning blank rows/columns

The next step, which begins our transformation steps, removes any empty rows or columns. By eliminating these blank rows or columns early in our process, we avoid potential issues downstream and reduce clutter in the dataset.

    //STEP 02: Cleaning blank rows/columns
    //Clean blank rows
    RemoveBlankRows = Table.SelectRows(PromoteHeaders, each not List.IsEmpty(List.RemoveMatchingItems(Record.FieldValues(_), {"", null}))),
    //Clean blank columns
    RemoveBlankColumns = Table.SelectColumns(RemoveBlankRows, List.Select(Table.ColumnNames(RemoveBlankRows), each not List.IsEmpty(List.RemoveMatchingItems(Table.Column(RemoveBlankRows, _), {""," ", null})))),

STEP 03: Replace empty strings with null

Empty strings can cause common issues in our analysis. This step replaces empty string values in the dataset with null, making the data more consistent, better understood, and easier to work with.

    //STEP 03: Replace empty strings with null
    ReplaceValue = Table.ReplaceValue(RemoveBlankColumns,"",null,Replacer.ReplaceValue,Table.ColumnNames(RemoveBlankColumns)),

STEP 04: Remove duplicates

Using the fxTransformRemoveDuplicates utility function, this step removes duplicated rows from the dataset.

//STEP 04: Remove duplicates
    RemoveDuplicates = fxTransformRemoveDuplicates(ReplaceValue),

STEP 05: Text transformations

The text transformations start with trimming our text values to ensure there are no leading or trailing spaces, using the fxTransformTextTrim utility function.

Then, the text values get standardized using the fxTransformTextFormat utility function to make our data more readable and consistent.

//STEP 05: Text transformations
    // Convert the textColumns parameter into a list
    TextColumnsToTransform = fxParameterToList(textColumns),
    // Apply the TrimTextColumns function
    TrimTextColumns = fxTransfromTextTrim(RemoveDuplicates, TextColumnsToTransform),
    // Apply the TransformTextCase function for Proper Case (can also be "Lower" or "Upper")
    FormatTextColumns = fxTransformTextFormat(TrimTextColumns, TextColumnsToTransform, textFormatCase)

Core Function – LoadCSVData

The LoadCSVData function is the layer connecting the different elements of our Power Query solution. It loads multiple CSV files from our SharePoint source, applies the fxTransformCSV function to each file, and handles final data preparations.

This function is adaptable by leveraging Power Query parameters, allowing us to easily modify the data preparation process to meet our project’s requirements (e.g. switching to different SharePoint sites or folders).

() as table =>
let

    //STEP 01: Load files from SharePoint
    SharePointSite = SharePoint.Files(#"SharePoint Site Url", [ApiVersion = 15]),
    SharePointFolder = Table.SelectRows(SharePointSite, each ([Folder Path] = #"SharePoint Folder Path")),

    //STEP 02: Invoke the fxTransformCSV function for each file
    TransformCSVResult = Table.AddColumn(SharePointFolder, "TransformCSV", each fxTransformCSV([Content])),

    //STEP 03: Renaming and removing columns
    // Rename the "Name" column for clarity
    PrefixSouceName = Table.RenameColumns(TransformCSVResult,{{"Name", "source.Name"}}),
    // Remove other columns to focus on the transformed data
    RemoveColumns = Table.SelectColumns(PrefixSouceName,{"source.Name", "TransformCSV"}),

    //STEP 04: Expand the transformed CSV data
    ExpandTransformCSV = Table.ExpandTableColumn(RemoveColumns, "TransformCSV", Table.ColumnNames(TransformCSVResult{0}[TransformCSV])),

    //STEP 05: Set data types
    ColumnTypePairs = Text.Split(columnDataTypes, ";"),
    // Trim spaces and split each pair into a list of {column name, data type}
    ColumnTypeList = List.Transform(ColumnTypePairs, each
        let
            PairParts = List.Transform(Text.Split(_, ","), Text.Trim),
            ColumnName = List.First(PairParts),
            ColumnType = fxTransformSetDataTypes(List.Last(PairParts))
        in
            {ColumnName, ColumnType}
    ),
    // Dynamically set the column data types
    SetDataTypes = Table.TransformColumnTypes(ExpandTransformCSV, ColumnTypeList),

    //STEP 06: Error handling
    ErrorHandlingOutput = fxErrorHandling(SetDataTypes, errorHandlingOption)
in
    ErrorHandlingOutput

Breaking down fxLoadCSVData

STEP 01: Load files from SharePoint

The function begins by connecting to the specified SharePoint site using the SharePoint Site Url parameter. Then, it filters the files to those located within the specified SharePoint Folder Path. Using both parameters allows us to target the specific CSV files required for our analysis.

//STEP 01: Load files from SharePoint
SharePointSite = SharePoint.Files(#"SharePoint Site Url", [ApiVersion = 15]),
SharePointFolder = Table.SelectRows(SharePointSite, each ([Folder Path] = #"SharePoint Folder Path"))

STEP 02: Invoke the fxTransformCSV function for each file

For each file in our SharePoint source, we add a new column and invoke our custom fxTransformCSV function. This step ensures each file is processed consistently.

//STEP 02: Invoke the fxTransformCSV function for each file
TransformCSVResult = Table.AddColumn(SharePointFolder, "TransformCSV", each fxTransformCSV([Content]))

STEP 03: Renaming and removing columns

To improve the clarity of our columns, we renamed the Name column to source.Name, indicating that it represents the original file name. This clearly indicates what this column is while providing information on the file the row of data is associated with.

The function then removes unnecessary columns, and we keep only source.Name and TransformCSV columns.

//STEP 03: Renaming and removing columns
// Rename the "Name" column for clarity
PrefixSouceName = Table.RenameColumns(TransformCSVResult,{{"Name", "source.Name"}}),
// Remove other columns to focus on the transformed data
RemoveColumns = Table.SelectColumns(PrefixSouceName,{"source.Name", "TransformCSV"})

STEP 04: Expand the transformed CSV data

We expand the TransformCSV column into individual files, which compiles all the transformed CSV data into a single table.

//STEP 04: Expand the transformed CSV data
ExpandTransformCSV = Table.ExpandTableColumn(RemoveColumns, "TransformCSV", Table.ColumnNames(TransformCSVResult{0}[TransformCSV]))

STEP 05: Set data types

In this step, the function dynamically sets the data types for each column based on the columnDataTypes Power Query parameter. The TransformSetDataTypes function maps each column to its specified data type.

//STEP 05: Set data types
ColumnTypePairs = Text.Split(columnDataTypes, ";"),
// Trim spaces and split each pair into a list of {column name, data type}
ColumnTypeList = List.Transform(ColumnTypePairs, each
    let
        PairParts = List.Transform(Text.Split(_, ","), Text.Trim),
        ColumnName = List.First(PairParts),
        ColumnType = fxTransformSetDataTypes(List.Last(PairParts))
    in
       {ColumnName, ColumnType}
),
// Dynamically set the column data types
SetDataTypes = Table.TransformColumnTypes(ExpandTransformCSV, ColumnTypeList)

STEP 06: Error handling

The function concludes by handling errors in the dataset according to the errorHandlingOption parameter. If the viewErrorSummary is set to true, the function returns a summary of rows that contain errors, otherwise it returns the cleaned dataset.

//STEP 06: Error handling
ErrorHandlingOutput = fxErrorHandling(SetDataTypes, errorHandlingOption)

Applying and Extending the Power Query Solution

We have explored and started constructing a flexible approach to standardize and ensure our data preparation steps are applied consistently within and across our Power BI projects.

The final query loaded to our Power BI data model is rpt_SharePointCSVData. This query utilizes the fxLoadCSVData function to bring each step together and deliver a clean and consistent data set to our Power BI report.

let
    Source = fxLoadCSVData()
in
    Source

This simple query calls the fxLoadCSVData function, which loads and processes the CSV files according to previously defined transformations and parameters. The result is a clean, ready-to-use dataset.

This solution is designed to be adaptable and can be applied to different Power BI projects that require loading CSV files from a SharePoint source.

A Power BI template and sample data files are available at the link below to view an example of how this solution can be applied. This file can be used as a starting point for our Power BI projects, or you can copy and paste specific folders or elements of it into an existing project.

To successfully apply this solution:

Start with the Parameters: define the parameters relevant to the project.

Open the template file and, when prompted, populate each parameter with the required information.

For example, the parameters can be set using the sample files to the following.

SharePoint Site Url:
https://yourcompany.sharepoint.com/sites/yoursite

SharePoint Folder Path:
https://yourcompany.sharepoint.com/sites/yoursite/yourfolder/

textFormatCase:
Proper

textColumns:
Event Name, Location, Organizer Name

columnDataTypes:
Event Date,date;Event ID,whole number;Event Name,text;Location,text;Organizer Name,text;Number of Attendees,whole number;Feedback Score,decimal number

errorHandlingOption:
ReplaceErrors

viewErrorSummary:
FALSE

Then, under the Load dropdown, select Edit to explore this solution in the Power Query Editor.

Once the data is loaded, you can modify the textFormatCase, error handling option, and viewErrorSummary parameters in the Power Query Editor to view the results when you select different options.

Customize the Utility Functions: if different projects have unique requirements, consider modifying or extending the utility functions.

Leverage the modular structure: This solution’s modular design makes adding or removing steps easy based on the project’s specific needs.

Extend with new functions: as our data processing needs evolve, we can extend this solution by adding new functions or adding more flexibility to our existing ones.

Wrapping Up

This post explores a solution that leverages Power Query parameters, functions, and queries to streamline our data preparation process. Combining custom functions with parameters provides us with a framework that can be adapted to meet the demands of different projects.

The design approach used in this solution aims to enhance the maintainability and reusability of each of its components. As we continue to work with and expand this solution, we will build a library of reusable functions to increase our efficiency in future projects.

The Best Apple Watch Speaker Apps

February 20, 2025 Arthur Reynolds

Apple Watch

The Apple Watch Series 10 and Ultra 2 have introduced a significant enhancement in wearable technology by allowing audio playback directly through their internal speakers. This feature removes the dependency on wireless earbuds or iPhone tethering, allowing users to enjoy music, podcasts, audiobooks, and more straight from their wrist. With this advancement, third-party apps have risen to the occasion, offering diverse and tailored audio experiences. In the video below, HotshotTek delves into the top apps across various categories and explores how they use this feature to enhance usability.

Music Streaming

Music streaming remains a primary use case for the Apple Watch’s internal speakers, offering convenience and flexibility for users. Here’s how the leading apps compare:

  • Apple Music: Provides seamless integration with the Apple Watch, allowing users to play tracks, albums, or playlists directly through the speakers. This app eliminates the need for additional devices, making it a top choice for music lovers.
  • Spotify: Offers similar functionality for Premium subscribers, allowing direct playback through the watch’s speakers. However, free-tier users must rely on their phones or headphones, limiting its standalone appeal.
  • YouTube Music: Currently does not support speaker playback, which restricts its usability for those seeking a fully independent music experience.

For users seeking a comprehensive and independent music streaming solution, Apple Music stands out as the leader, with Spotify serving as a strong alternative for Premium subscribers.

Video Playback

While video playback on a smartwatch may seem unconventional, it is a feature that some apps have embraced to expand the device’s versatility.

  • Delta Tube: Enables users to watch YouTube videos and listen to their audio directly through the watch’s speakers. Although still in beta, it offers a smoother experience compared to other YouTube-related apps, making it a promising option for quick video clips or audio-focused content like tutorials and music videos.

This functionality is not a primary use case for most users but adds an extra layer of utility to the Apple Watch, particularly for those who value quick access to video content.

Podcasts

Podcast enthusiasts will appreciate the differences in app functionality when it comes to speaker playback. Some apps excel in offering a fully independent experience:

  • Overcast: Allows users to download episodes directly to the Apple Watch, allowing playback through the internal speakers. This makes it an excellent choice for those who prefer a standalone podcast experience without relying on their phone.
  • Pocket Casts: Does not support direct speaker playback, requiring users to use their phone or headphones for listening.

For a hands-free and independent podcast experience, Overcast emerges as the clear winner, catering to users who prioritize convenience and portability.

Audiobooks

Audiobook listeners will find varying levels of support for speaker playback on the Apple Watch, depending on the app:

  • Audible: Offers robust compatibility, allowing users to access their library and play audiobooks directly from the watch. This makes it a convenient option for on-the-go listening, especially for those who prefer a standalone setup.
  • Apple Audiobooks: Still relies on iPhone playback, which may disappoint users seeking a fully independent experience within Apple’s ecosystem.

Audible stands out as the superior choice for audiobook enthusiasts, providing flexibility and ease of use for those who want to enjoy their favorite books without additional devices.

White Noise and Meditation Sounds

White noise and meditation apps have embraced the Apple Watch’s speaker functionality, offering unique benefits for relaxation and focus:

  • Endel: Streams live white noise and meditation sounds directly through the watch’s speakers. This app is ideal for users looking to relax or concentrate without the need for headphones.
  • Calm: Does not currently support direct speaker playback, which limits its appeal for standalone use.

For a hands-free and immersive relaxation experience, Endel is the go-to app, providing a practical solution for users seeking tranquility on the move.

Radio Streaming

Live radio streaming is another area where the Apple Watch excels, offering users access to real-time audio content:

  • Streamlets: A versatile app that allows users to listen to live radio stations and news directly through the watch’s speakers. It is compatible with both newer and older Apple Watch models, making sure broad accessibility for a wide range of users.

Whether you’re tuning into local news or enjoying music stations, Streamlets delivers a reliable and user-friendly solution for live radio streaming.

Expanding Possibilities

The internal speaker playback feature is a testament to the advanced hardware capabilities of the Apple Watch Series 10 and Ultra 2. However, app compatibility varies, and users should consider the following:

  • Some apps still rely on iPhone audio playback, limiting their standalone functionality.
  • Certain apps may require subscriptions or additional steps to unlock full features.
  • As developers continue to optimize their apps for the Apple Watch, more options are likely to emerge, further enhancing the device’s audio capabilities.

By selecting apps that fully use the internal speaker playback feature, users can transform their Apple Watch into a versatile and independent audio device. Whether you’re streaming music, catching up on podcasts, or enjoying white noise, the right apps can unlock the full potential of this innovative functionality.

You Can Now (Sort Of) Buy Books in Google Play Books for iOS

Apple doesn’t allow third-party e-book readers like Google Play Books to offer users direct purchases without taking its cut. But thanks to antitrust regulations, those restrictions are loosening, if just a bit. And so Google is taking advantage of the “reader” exception that allows it to communicate to its customers in its own app. Meaning that Google Play Books can now direct customers on iOS to a website where they can purchase e-books without interference from Apple.

“We are making purchases easier in the Play Books iOS app by introducing the ‘Get book’ button,” Google explains. “This button will take you directly to the Google Play website where you can purchase your selected e-book or audiobook.”

“*” indicates required fields

This change came about because of Epic v. Apple, with the Judge determining that Apple restricting developers from communicating with their own customers was anticompetitive. Apple fought this order repeatedly, but the U.S. Supreme Court declined to intervene in January 2024. And so developers could start communicating better pricing to their customers outside of Apple’s App Store.

Apple implemented an App Store rules change that same month that requires developers to submit an entitlement request form, configure the entitlement in Xcode, and then submit their app for review. Developers that wish to take advantage of this change also need to offer in-app purchases in their apps, limiting its appeal.

“With reader apps, people can sign in to their account created outside the app, letting them view and enjoy previously purchased media content or content subscriptions on their Apple device,” the Apple Developer website explains. “If you’d like your reader app to also provide a link to your website where people can create and manage their account … you must not include language that includes the price of items available on the website.” Along with a lot of other rules, of course.

Curious about this, I installed the Google Play Books app on iOS, and it’s the same experience we saw a year ago. Which is to say, terrible.

Berlin Film Festival 2025: All Of Deadline’s Movie Reviews

February 20, 2025 Arthur Reynolds

The Berlin Film Festival kicked off its 75th anniversary edition February 13 with the opening-night world premiere screening of The Light, Tom Tykwer’s politically charged film that takes stock of German society in the first quarter of the 21st century. It starts 11 days of debuts including for movies starring Jessica Chastain, Ethan Hawke, Margaret Qualley, Rupert Friend, Marion Cotillard, Rose Byrne, A$AP Rocky, Emma Mackey and more.

The 2025 Berlinale runs through February 23.

Keep checking back below as Deadline reviews the best and buzziest movies of the festival. Click on the titles to read the full reviews.

Blue-moon

Berlin Film Festival

Section: Competition
Director: Richard Linklater
Cast: Ethan Hawke, Margaret Qualley, Bobby Cannavale, Andrew Scott
Deadline’s takeaway: Richard Linklater’s Broadway chamber piece looks back to a lost time and mourns a lost soul in Lorenz Hart as the booze is about to consume him. In a bravura theatrical performance, Ethan Hawke makes the lyricist’s genius truly pathetic. — SB

‘The Blue Trail’

Berlin Film Festival

Section: Competition
Directors-screenwriters: Gabriel Mascaro, Tibério Azul
Cast: Denise Weinberg, Rodrigo Santoro, Miriam Socarrás, Adanilo, Clarissa Pinheiro
Deadline’s takeaway: Set aglow by the earthy force of Denise Weinberg as Tereza, The Blue Trail posits a river trip as a path to freedom, and its unpreachy warmth — despite occasional lags in momentum — offers refreshing rewards. — JW

Jessica Chastain in 'Dreams'

‘Dreams’

Teorema

Section: Competition
Director-screenwriter: Michel Franco
Cast: Jessica Chastain,  Isaac Hernández, Rupert Friend, Marshall Bell
Deadline’s takeaway: Michel Franco’s skewqering of woke hypocracy is thuddingly obvious, both at the level of metaphor — as a fable of North-South exploitation, which is one of Michel Franco’s stated purposes — and as a drama of thwarted love. — SB

‘Girls on Wire’

L’Avventura Films

Section: Competition
Director-screenwriter: Vivian Qu
Cast: Liu Haocun, Wen Qi, Zhang Youhao, Zhou You, Peng Jing
Deadline’s takeaway: Surprisingly gritty study of people left behind or living in the margins fuses gangster realism with social drama and leavens both with a dash of unexpected humor. The subtext of Girls on Wire is more powerful than what passes as the plot. — DW

Emma Mackey and Fiona Shaw in 'Hot Milk'

‘Hot Milk’

Nikos Nikolopoulos / MUBI

Section: Competition
Director-screenwriter: Rebecca Lenkiewicz
Cast: Emma Mackey, Fiona Shaw, Vicky Krieps, Vincent Perez, Patsy Ferran
Deadline’s takeaway: The complex dependencies and jealousies between mothers and daughters are not exactly virgin territory, but the book’s author Deborah Levy and Lenkiewicz have a tough take on the way the mother’s sins are visited on her child that is frank and fresh enough to make us gasp. — SB

‘The Ice Tower’

3B Productions

Section: Competition
Director: Lucile Hadžihalilović
Cast: Marion Cotillard, Clara Pacini, August Diehl, Gaspar Noé, Marine Gesbert
Deadline’s takeaway: The Ice Tower is full of brilliantly conceived and rendered pathways that end in cul-de-sacs; it is beguiling, but hardly satisfying. While it is always a pleasure to watch Marion Cotillard piece together a character, and it’s pleasure just to look at her, it’s not enough. — SB

Sam Riley in 'Islands'

‘Islands’

Protagonist

Section: Special Gala
Director: Jan-Ole Gerster
Cast: Sam Riley, Stacy Martin, Jack Farthing, Dylan Torrell
Deadline’s takeaway: Despite the subtropical trappings, the main character Tom’s stasis has a fundamental ordinariness, and that turns his trouble in paradise into a more universal call to stop sleepwalking through life. — NR

‘Kontinental ’25’

Saga Films

Section: Competition
Director-screenwriter: Radu Jude
Cast: Eszter Tompa, Gabriel Spahiu, Adonis Tanța, Oana Mardare, Șerban Pavlu
Deadline’s takeaway: Radu Jude’s assault on gentrification in Romania finds him in a surprisingly contemplative mood as he bundles up his usual firecracker concerns. The filmmaker is on, if not his best behavior, at least the kind of behavior that won’t get him thrown out of a diplomatic reception — SB

‘Late Shift’

Berlin Film Festival

Section: Special Gala
Director:-screenwriter: Nadia Fall
Cast: Leonie Benesch, Sonja Riesen, Urs Bihler, Margherita Schoch, Jürg Plüss
Deadline’s takeaway: Petra Volpe’s busy, urgent cancer-ward procedural moves like a thriller and is exactly what it says it is: a shift in the life of a nurse, a pile of incidents encountered at speed. And through it all, there is a sense of imminent danger. — SB

‘The Light’

X Filme

Section: Out of Competition (Opening Night)
Director-screenwriter: Tom Tykwer
Cast: Nicolette Krebitz, Lars Eidinger, Tala Al-Deen, Elke Biesendorfer, Julius Gause
Deadline’s takeaway: Beware novel psychological therapies from Austria: You never know where they may lead. Tom Tykwer tests Germany’s white liberal guilt, but why it has to be so long is as much of a puzzle as the workings of the light therapy. It is surprisingly watchable, though. — SB

'Living The Land'

‘Living the Land’

Floating Light (Foshan) Film and Culture

Section: Competition
Director-screenwriter: Huo Meng
Cast: Wang Shang, Zhang Yanrong, Zhang Chuwen, Zhang Caixia
Deadline’s takeaway: Rather than a static tribute to the countryside, Huo’s lovely roving eye for composition and gentle hand with drama trace the challenges and enduring bonds among several hard-working generations of Chinese farmers, set during the 1990s in a country on the cusp of vast change. — NR

‘Mickey 17’

Warner Bros Pictures

Section: Out of Competition
Director-screenwriter: Bong Joon Ho
Cast: Robert Pattinson, Mark Ruffalo, Toni Collette, Naomi Ackie, Steven Yeun
Deadline’s takeaway: Mickey is part of constant experiments to help researchers see what causes death and disease, so he is killed again and again, always being reprinted to continue the process. The thought-provoking satire is a not-that-absurd look at where we just might be headed as a society. — PH

‘Mother’s Baby’

FreibeuterFilm

Section: Competition
Director: Johanna Moder
Cast: Marie Leuenberger, Hans Löw, Claes Bang, Julia Franz Richter
Deadline’s takeaway: Johanna Moder’s latest rivals David Lynch’s Eraserhead as a visceral evocation of new parenthood. This film is a bit like screaming your lungs out on a carnival ride, as the leads do early on: petrifying, but you’re glad you did it.— SB

‘The Narrow Road to the Deep North’

Curio Pictures

Section: Special Gala
Director: Justin Kurzel
Cast: Jacob Elordi, Ciaran Hinds, Odessa Young, Olivia DeJonge, Simon Baker
Deadline’s takeaway: Despite this being a series, Justin Kurzel pays little to no attention to the conventional episodic arc. How well its moody atmosphere and slowly unfolding story will play in a loungeroom is open to question. In the cinema, it is utterly immersive. — SB

‘Olmo’

Plan B

Section: Panorama
Director: Fernando Eimbcke
Cast: Aivan Uttapa, Gustavo Sanchez Parra, Andrea Suarez Paz, Rosa Armendariz, Diego Olmedo, Melanie Frometa
Deadline’s takeaway: At its heart, Olmo is a simple story about immigrants, coming of age, growing up, taking responsibility, love, friendship, a stereo, a barbecue, roller skates and above all family. — PH

'What Marielle Knows' review

‘What Marielle Knows’

Section: Competition
Director-screenwriter: Frédéric Hambalek
Cast: Julia Jentsch, Felix Kramer, Laeni Geiseler, Mehmet Aleşçi, Moritz Treuenfels
Deadline’s takeaway: It turns out Marielle knows a whole lot after suddenly developing telepathic abilities. It’s a good premise, and Hambalek plays it well by keeping it as natural as possible, minimizing the paranormal element and homing in on classic male/female behavior. But that’s the problem: It’s all rather too predictable. — JW

‘Yunan’

Red Balloon Film, Productions/Microclimat/Intramovies

Section: Competition
Director-screenwriter: Ameer Fakher Eldin
Cast: George Khabbaz, Hanna Schygulla, Ali Suliman, Sibel Kekilli, Tom Wlaschiha, Nidal Al Achkar
Deadline’s takeaway: Ameer Fakher Eldin’s atmospheric sophomore feature keeps the audience at a certain remove, refusing clear-cut explanations or simple emotional catharses. — JW

Design Meets Data: A Guide to Building Engaging Power BI Report Navigation

February 20, 2025 Arthur Reynolds

Streamlined report navigation with built-in tools to achieve functional, maintainable, and engaging navigation in Power BI reports.

Before we begin developing the navigational element of our reports, we must decide what tools to use. The Design Meets Data series started with two previous posts in which we explored two approaches: using Figma to design and customize our navigation and using Power BI’s built-in shapes, bookmarks, and buttons to create a similar experience with native tools.

This post will explore using Power BI’s Page Navigator to simplify our navigation setup. Each approach has its own level of flexibility and ease of maintenance, so it’s important to choose the right method based on the project’s requirements.

The Power BI Page Navigator

Power BI’s Page Navigator lets us create a dynamic and interactive navigation menu in our reports. It is an out-of-the-box solution that simplifies the navigation experience.

Since the Page Navigator is a native feature, it requires minimal setup and automatically adjusts when new pages are added to the report. However, some adjustments may still be needed, such as resizing or formatting changes to accommodate report updates.

To add a Page Navigator to our report, we go to the Insert tab in Power BI Desktop, then select Navigator > Page navigator under the Buttons dropdown.

Customization Options

Power BI provides various options to customize the appearance of our Page Navigator, such as changing the font, colors, shapes, borders, and even what pages are listed. This allows us to create a navigational element that fits seamlessly within our report’s aesthetic.

Although the design flexibility is not as extensive as in our previous example using Figma, the Page Navigator option strikes a balance between ease of use and visual appeal.

Building the Navigation Pane

Now that we have covered the basics of the Page Navigator, we can begin building the navigation pane for our report. The navigation pane will be located on the left-hand side of our report and will serve as both the page navigation and container for our page slicers.

Below, is the final product. Follow the detailed step-by-step guide provided to create your own navigation pane

Building the navigation pane

We begin building the navigational pane on the left-hand side of our report canvas. First, we add a rectangle to the report canvas and style it to meet our needs. The navigation pane has a height equal to the report canvas and a width of 140. We set the fill color to dark blue, which is our Theme 1, 50% darker.

Next, we add a rectangle at the top of the navigation pane to provide an accent and space for displaying an organizational logo within our report. This rectangle has a height of 40 and a width of 140, and its fill color is set to the accent color of our report theme.

With the basic structure of our navigation pane in place, we then move on to adding the Page Navigator.

Formatting the Page Navigator

We begin by selecting the Insert tab on the main ribbon. Then, under the Button dropdown, select Navigator > Page navigator.

Once the Page Navigator is added to the report canvas, go to the Format pane and select Vertical from the Orientation dropdown under the Grid layout property.

Under the Pages property, we find options to control what pages are displayed within our report navigation. In the Options group, we can set general options such as Show hidden pages, Show tooltip pages, and Show all by default. Additionally, in the Show group, we can explicitly set which pages are shown in the navigation by using the toggles next to each report page.

Once our navigation displays the required pages, we adjust the width of the navigator object to 130 and the height to 105. Note that the height should be adjusted based on the number of pages in the navigation. In this example, we use a basic calculation to calculate the height by multiplying the number of pages by 35 ( 3 pages x 35 = 105).

Lastly, we set the horizontal position of the navigator object to 10 and the vertical position to 100.

Styling the Page Navigator

Once we finish the basic formatting, we customize the navigator to match the look of our report. Our aim with the styling is to make it easier to identify the current page.

We do this by adjusting the Style properties of the Page Navigator and using the Apply settings to State dropdown.

Below are the key differences between our page navigator’s Default, Hover, Press, and Selected states.

Default
Text > Font: Segoe UI
Text > Font Color: light blue, Theme color 1, 60% lighter
Text > Horizontal alignment: left
Text > Padding: left 5 px
Fill > Color: dark blue (#06435F)
Border: off

Text >Horizontal alignment: left
Text> Padding: left 5 px
Fill > Color: dark blue, Theme color 1, 25% darker

Selected

Glow: off
Accent bar > Position: right
Accent bar > Color: accent green (#6CBE4B)
Accent bar > Width: 6px

After configuring all the styling options, our report page will have an engaging and interactive navigation panel.

Comparing the Approaches

When building a navigational component within our reports, we have a wide variety of options and approaches to choose from. Each report has unique requirements, so it’s important to compare and contrast these different approaches based on performance, ease of maintenance, and design flexibility.

Performance Comparison

Figma: Our Figma-based designs require importing images into Power BI. This can improve the load time of our reports because the report does not have to render each shape and component independently.

Power BI Native Shapes and Buttons: This option has the advantage of only requiring our development work to occur in Power BI. However, each shape and component added to build our navigation pane has to be loaded each time our report page is viewed.

Page Navigator: This offers a fully integrated approach with minimal overhead. However, we lose full control over design and aesthetics.

Ease of Maintenance

Figma: Our Figma-based approach is the most complex to maintain. Every design update requires going back to Figma, redesigning, re-exporting from Figma, and re-importing and integrating into our Power BI report.

Power BI Native Shapes and Buttons: This approach has the advantage of only using Power BI to maintain our navigational element but still requires manual updates when adding or removing pages from our report.

Page Navigator: This is the easiest option to maintain because the page navigator updates with any page additions or changes. However, the size of the object may still need to be adjusted.

Design Flexibility

Figma: Offers the highest level of design customization. We can create any design we can think up, however, this comes with added complexity and time requirements.

Power BI Native Shapes and Buttons: Provides us more flexibility than the page navigator, allowing us to customize our design and layout. However, we may still encounter design limitations depending on the options provided by Power BI.

Page Navigator: The most straightforward to implement but offers limited customization options, which restricts design flexibility. It prioritizes ease of maintenance over complex designs.

Final Thoughts

Deciding on the proper navigation for our Power BI reports depends on balancing design flexibility, ease of maintenance, and performance. Leveraging Figma allows for fully custom designs but comes with more complex maintenance. Power BI offers various native tools to help design navigational elements, although building a custom navigational pane will still require manual updates. Power BI’s Page Navigator stands out for its simplicity, dynamic updating, and minimal maintenance effort. However, the cost of the simplicity is limited customization and design flexibility.

The Design Meets Data series explored three approaches to building a Power BI report navigational pane.

There are seemingly endless other approaches to creating this critical part of our Power reports. How do you approach your report’s navigation?

Super Bowl Sunday should be a nationaln holiday

February 20, 2025 Arthur Reynolds

I’m going to make a proposal. I know it’s Valentine’s Day weekend, but it’s not that kind. And not to disappoint you but it’s not even that novel. But here it is.

Super Bowl Sunday should be a national holiday.

I’m not even a big football fan, but I’d argue that neither are the millions of others like me, who not only watch the final game of the season but make it a festivity complete with chips, dips, and cold beverages. I’m going to go a step further and wager that most of those same people, maybe more, value Super Bowl Sunday more than Valentine’s Day.

Last year, more than half of the U.S. population watched Super Bowl LVIII, the most watched Super Bowl in pro football history. Also last year, about 53 percent of Americans surveyed said they planned to celebrate Valentine’s Day, down from 60 percent in the late 2000s and early 2010s.

This isn’t a new concept and it’s not a hard one to figure out. Most adults I know don’t want to leave home if they can avoid it. There’s even data to prove we won’t do it. We’re fine buying candy and flowers, but skipping dinner and a date is just fine with us, too. So, it comes as no surprise to me that fewer people are choosing not to celebrate Valentine’s Day – we just don’t want to be bothered with getting dressed up and fighting crowds. We don’t have to leave home to watch the game.

Here’s another reason my proposal is defensible. Holidays are a dime a dozen. Do you know how many there are in this month alone? One of them is National Cherry Pie Day, celebrated on Feb. 20. Cherries aren’t even in season this month, but George Washington’s birthday is celebrated, hence, the connection. A quick internet search will reveal this…in that same list of holidays is “the Super Bowl.”

I also learned while doing my research that Super Bowl Sunday is considered an unofficial holiday already, according to Britannica. A New York Post poll found that 55 percent of 3,000 football fans surveyed wish the Monday after the Super Bowl was an official holiday. Two-thirds of the people surveyed just disliked Mondays, and half of them were mourning the loss of their team.

My proposal isn’t even asking for Monday to be a national holiday, so I can have a day off work. It won’t cost money or interrupt anyone’s routine or livelihood in a bad way. In fact, making the Super Bowl a national holiday has a lot of upsides. The marketing alone will be spectacular!

The numbers tell the story. This month, people will get more excited about the most popular sporting event of modern times, and less excited about our most historically adored lover’s holiday. I consider myself to be a romantic, and while I haven’t lost any love for Valentine’s Day, I can certainly understand the attraction to The Super Bowl. Maybe it’s time it got the status it deserves in our national holiday listings.

A Compact and Eco-Friendly Cleaning Solution

Early bird tier pledges are now available for the awesome project from roughly $199 or £159 (depending on current exchange rates), offering a considerable discount of approximately 43% off the MSRP, while the Kickstarter crowd funding is under way.

Key Specifications :

  • Ultrasonic cleaning technology operating at 37,000Hz for efficient, chemical-free cleaning of dishes, produce, jewelry, and more.
  • Active oxygen (ozone) technology for sterilization, neutralizing bacteria, fungi, molds, and viruses while reducing pesticide residues.
  • Portable and compact design, sink-compatible, and easy to set up, ideal for small kitchens, dorms, or outdoor use.
  • Eco-friendly operation with minimal water and energy consumption compared to traditional dishwashers.
  • Multifunctional capabilities, including cleaning delicate items, removing rust, and defrosting frozen food.

The SterilPure portable dishwasher represents a notable advancement in eco-friendly cleaning technology, offering a compact and versatile solution for modern households. SterilPure Portable Ultrasonic Dishwasher

Versatile ultrasonic dishwasher for sustainable household cleaning

If and when the SterilPure campaign successfully raises its required pledge goal and manufacturing progresses smoothly, worldwide shipping is expected to take place sometime around May 2025. To learn more about the SterilPure portable ultrasonic dishwasher project evaluate the promotional video below.

At the heart of the SterilPure dishwasher is its ultrasonic cleaning technology, which operates at a frequency of 37,000Hz. This high-frequency vibration generates microscopic bubbles in water, creating a powerful cleaning action that effectively breaks down grease, oil, and stubborn residues. Unlike traditional dishwashers that rely on mechanical scrubbing or harsh detergents, ultrasonic waves penetrate hard-to-reach areas, making sure a thorough clean without damaging fragile items. This makes the device highly versatile, capable of cleaning not only dishes but also fruits, vegetables, seafood, tools, and even rusted objects.

To further enhance its cleaning performance, the SterilPure dishwasher integrates active oxygen (ozone) technology. Ozone, a naturally occurring molecule, is highly effective at neutralizing bacteria, fungi, molds, and viruses. This sterilization process eliminates harmful microorganisms and reduces pesticide residues on food, promoting safer consumption. Unlike chemical-based cleaning agents, ozone leaves no residue, making it an ideal choice for households seeking a healthier, chemical-free cleaning solution.

Compact Design and Portability

Its lightweight design makes it particularly suitable for small kitchens, dorm rooms, or outdoor use. This eliminates the need for cabinet modifications, water line installations, or wall drilling, offering flexibility and convenience for a variety of living spaces.

Environmentally Conscious Cleaning

In addition to its convenience, the SterilPure dishwasher is an environmentally conscious choice. Traditional dishwashers often consume significant amounts of water and energy, but this device minimizes resource usage without compromising performance. By using ultrasonic waves and ozone technology, it achieves high cleaning efficiency while using only a fraction of the water required by conventional methods. This makes it an attractive option for individuals who prioritize sustainability in their daily routines.

Apple Announces iPhone 16E Starting at $599

February 20, 2025 Arthur Reynolds

Apple iPhone 16E

Apple has just taken the wraps off the iPhone 16E, the company’s new entry-level iPhone that uses the same design as the iPhone 14 except for a new USB-C charging port and a 48MP 2-in-1 rear camera system. Under the hood, the iPhone 16E uses the same A18 chip as the iPhone 16 series, but it’s the first iPhone to ship with Apple’s new C1 cellular modem.

“iPhone 16e packs in the features our users love about the iPhone 16 lineup, including breakthrough battery life, fast performance powered by the latest-generation A18 chip, an innovative 2-in-1 camera system, and Apple Intelligence,” said Kaiann Drance, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide iPhone Product Marketing. “We’re so excited for iPhone 16e to complete the lineup as a powerful, more affordable option to bring the iPhone experience to even more people.”

Just like the iPhone 14, the iPhone 16E comes with a 6.1-inch OLED display with a notch hiding the Face ID sensor and front-facing camera instead of Apple’s more subtle Dynamic Island system. There’s also a new customizable Action button on the side, but no Camera Control button like on the iPhone 16 series. The iPhone 16E also uses USB-C for charging, which is now mandatory for all phones sold in the EU.

The “Fusion” camera on the iPhone 16E can take high-resolution 24MP and 48 MP photos, and it supports the new AI-powered Visual Intelligence feature. It also comes with an integrated 2x Telephoto sensor. “Users have the equivalent of two cameras in one, and can zoom in with optical quality to get closer to the subject and easily frame their shot,” Apple explained today. As for the iPhone 16E’s front-facing camera, it supports Portrait mode with Depth Control, but not the Focus feature found on the iPhone 14.

Thanks to its new C1 modem, Apple promises up to 26 hours of video playback on the iPhone 16E, compared to 22 hours on the iPhone 16 and 20 hours on the iPhone 14. “C1 is the first modem designed by Apple and the most power-efficient modem ever on an iPhone, delivering fast and reliable 5G cellular connectivity,” the company said today. “Apple silicon — including C1 — the all-new internal design, and the advanced power management of iOS 18 all contribute to extraordinary battery life.”

A quick note about wireless charging support: The iPhone 16E supports Qi wireless charging up to 7.5W, but it’s not compatible with MagSafe cases, wallets, wireless chargers, and more. The more expensive iPhone 16 series supports wireless charging up to 25W with these MagSafe accessories.

The iPhone 16E will be available in matte black and white finishes, and pre-orders will open on Friday, February 21. Prices will start at $599 for the 128GB model, with the 256GB and 512GB priced at $699 and $899, respectively. That’s quite a price hike compared to the $429 3rd-gen iPhone SE (which Apple has now discontinued), but this is also a substantial upgrade from a design and performance standpoint. The iPhone 16E will start shipping on February 28th, let us know in the comments if you think it could become a new volume seller for Apple.
