Amazon has just announced that it will retire its Amazon Appstore for Android devices on August 20, 2025. The company is also retiring today its Amazon Coins currency, which could used to make purchases on certain apps and in-app purchases in the Android Appstore.
I was notified by email today about the upcoming retirement of the Amazon Appstore for Android, and the company also published an FAQ about the transition. This doesn’t affect the Amazon Appstore for Fire TV and Fire Tablet devices, which will both remain available.

The Amazon Appstore for Android had to be installed manually by Android users, so it never really stood a chance against the Google Play Store, which is pretty much the default option to get apps on Android phones and tablets. While the Amazon Appstore for Android will remain available to download until August 20, any apps downloaded from it may eventually stop working after that date.
For users who still have Amazon Coins to use on the Android Appstore, Amazon will be refunding these points after August 20. As it’s no longer possible to purchase Amazon Coins today, users who want to use their remaining points to make an Appstore purchase can use a credit card to complete the transaction.
On March 5, the Amazon Appstore for Windows 11 will also be discontinued alongside the Windows Subsystem for Android (WSA), so this Android announcement is probably not coincidental. Android apps on Windows PCs never made a lot of sense as native apps and web apps already provided a much better experience.
While the Amazon App Store for Android will soon go away, Epic Games recently made its Epic Games Store available worldwide on Android and in the EU for iOS users. The alternative app store recently welcomed a first wave of third-party games, and Epic Games is also planning a Free Games program similar to the one available for PC and Mac gamers.
